BLACKBURN Sunday League's Old Toll Bar began their defence of the Lancashire Sunday Trophy when they faced Blackpool side Christ the King at Pleasington.
The holders struggled to find their true form but made progress to the next round with a 2-0 scoreline. Martin Pearce and Lee Usborne provided the goals.
Both last season's beaten semi-finalists went through without conceding a goal. Darwen Alexandra defeated Our Lady 5-0, goals from Dave Atkinson (2), Paul Curley, Steve Peacock and Jerome Fitzgerald, while Station beat Bamber Bridge outfit Lancs & Yorks 2-0. The scorers were were Karl Baxter and John Eastham.
New Gardeners' first-ever appearance in this competition resulted in an easy 8-0 win over Penwortham side Peartree. Danny Kirby had a good day with five goals. Patrick Lauber, Craig Shorrock and Steve Whittaker made up the total.
Second Division Corning Communications overcame Lytham's Bodrum by the narrowest of margins. Dennis Hill was the only scorer in a very even match.
Bee Hive travelled to Blackpool to face former winners of the trophy Mammas. The Cherry Tree side showed just how much progress they have made over the last couple of seasons by producing a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes. Extra time still couldn't separate them. The replay will be at Pleasington on Sunday.
Dexter Paints entertained a good side in Anchorsholme. With the scores level at 2-2, Guramit Uppal and Nigel Golden on target for Dexters - the Blackburn side had chances to establish a comfortable lead. But the chances weren't taken and the visitors went on to a 6-2 victory. There was a lot of sympathy for Darwen St Peter's who had to face the powerful King's Inn with a severely under-strength side. They were a creditable 2-0 down at half time, but then injuries reduced them to eight men for the final 25 minutes after the subs had been used. The floodgates opened. Mark King scored five, Paul Guinan four, Mick Douglas hit a hat trick and Mark Whittaker completed the rout.
Division Two action saw Heys Inn drop their first points of the season, just a few days after being named September's Lower Audley Tyres Team of the Month. Lammack provided the opposition in a keenly contested match controlled by Nationwide League referee Tony Leake. Dave Shaw and Chris Traynor scored for Lammack, with Heys Inn equalising twice through Scott Hughes and Simon Gilrane.
In clear second place in this division are Witton Inn. They had two hat trick heroes in the 6-1 victory over Fox & Hounds. Paul Walker and Shaun Smith were their scorers, while Anthony Ferguson struck the consolation goal.
Cooper Rigg, the league's top scorers, hit the net four times against West End. Matthew Turner was responsible for two of them, Chris Swarbrick and John Brannigan the others. West End replied through Mick O'Callaghan and Paul Thompson.
Guide continued their excellent start to their Division Three campaign. The only goal they have conceded so far came on the opening day, and last weekend they put six past Sign & Poster. There was a fine hat trick from Dave Kennedy, Paul Brett scored twice, Karl Eastham once. GFR Plumbing also had three scorers. Mark Aspden, Mark Hine and Lee Smith had a goal apiece in the victory over James Street.
