LYTHAM ST ANNES MENS 1ST XI 5 DEESIDE RAMBLERS 2

APART from putting LSA firmly on top of Division 1 in the Northern Counties Hockey League with 14 goals for and only 2 against, the match indicated the improvement of the team this season having lost twice to their opponents last season. They started strongly and scored three times before Deeside replied just before half-time. Dave Robbins scored from a penalty stroke, David Hans added a second from a penalty corner and then Chris Kay added a third.

The Weather deteriorated in the second half with several powerful showers but LSA managed to score twice to Deesides one. Craig Nuttall scored from open play after a good opening creased by Robbins and then Ian Smith demonstrated his skill ability with a flat stick shot that "roofed it" into the net.

LSA 2ND XI 0 WILMSLOW 1ST XI 4

LSA suffered another disappointing defeat at the Ansdell Arena against a lively Wilmslow team. Without the mid-field controlling influence of John Pearson they were continually on the defensive.

LSA 3RD XI 1 TIMPERLEY 4TH XI 1

AFTER agreeing to postpone the league match due to torrential rain making the pitch almost unplayable the two sides enjoyed a hard fought game in a most friendly atmosphere. Timperley scored first although LSA did think the ball was diverted off an attackers foot before entering the ball. A young LSA team battled well with little reward and the defence of Gettings, Langford, Burnett, Barlong and Ashworth withstood any pressure between them.

In the second half LSA scored a good goal by Bridges after a run down the right wing by Cottier-Brown. LSA 4TH XI 4 NORTHOP HALL 2

LSA dominated the first half of their opening league match with an outstanding performance of man marking and strong passing. The scored three goals before half time. The first, following a penalty corner, was well struck from the circles edge, the ball being deflected for Sam Ashworth to slot home. Tim Killick, the captain, then centred well from the right wing and David Waby, lurking where all good left wingers should be by the left hand goal foot, swept the ball into goal. Sam Ashworth then scored the third with a fierce shot from the outer edge.

In the second half a dubious umpiring decision gave Northop their first goal, immediately countered by Mike Gannon to score LSA's fourth.

LSA BADGERS XI 0 BOLTON 3

DESPITE the defeat this was an encouraging start to the new season where a comparatively new set of young men joined a couple of their brethren to put together a spirited display that shows great promise for the season.

After going two down at half-time LSA came back strongly and were unlucky not to score on several occasions.

LYTHAM LADIES 1ST XI 2

BLACKPOOL & WYRE 0

THIS was a match played under very difficult circumstances with torrential downpours, gales and even hailstones! Lytham took a deserved lead as a result of awesome skill displayed by Heidi Whitehouse who beat five Blackpool players before flicking the ball home. Lytham maintained constant pressure and were rewarded by a second goal scored by Karen Lowe from the penalty spot.

Weather conditions worsened in the second half but Lytham remained the dominant side. However, Blackpool did eventually break through the Lytham defence only to be denied a goal by Sarah Frazer-Pitt in goal who made an excellent reflex save.
