EMPLOYEES at Geest Bananas have been told that the ripening plant in Walkers Lane, Sutton Manor, which opened in the sixties, is due to close in the next couple of months.
Operations director, Richard Worrall, travelled up from the company's headquarters in Southampton last week, to tell the 90 employees that the plant would be closing.
Mr Worrall told the Star: "Regrettably, I have announced the impending closure of the ripening centre in Sutton Manor, and we anticipate that it will be in the next couple of months. But we will be consulting with employees and their representatives over the coming weeks.
"It's very sad to have to close down the plant, but the company has been subject to increasing competition in the market place, and the closure arises because of the need to reduce operating costs."
