SANKEY Canal Restoration Society (SCARS), the Waterway Recovery Group and St Helens Ranger Service, are set to clean up two sections of the Sankey Canal in Earlestown on Sunday, October 10, starting at 10am.
Local volunteers are invited to join in the fun and help to fill a skip - courtesy of St Helens Council - with rubbish and vegetation cleared from the section of canal under and around Penkford Bridge on Common Road.
Alternatively they can help to uncover Newton Common Lock, which is situated just off Wharf Road. This second site has been chosen to give SCARS the opportunity to tell people of the impending restoration of the section under Nine Arches (Sankey Viaduct) from Newton Common Lock to Bradley Lock. This will be achieved with part of the £2 million set aside for environment improvements and canal restoration.
