SINGLES
IDLEWILD: Little Discourage (Food/EMI) - The Glaswegian indie upstarts return with a downbeat, dour number which mixes low vocals with gritty rock guitars. This single is hard-rocking and edgy but sadly lacking in originality. (5/10) PB
JO GREENWOOD: I Want To Put You In My Mouth (Heretic) - This is a miserably dated semi-ballad which mixes dodgy soft drum sounds like those found on Ultravox's Vienna with clean, phased guitars which sound like early U2. Drivel. (3/10) PB
ALBUMS
VARIOUS ARTISTS: Trance Mix 99 (Virgin) - Trance hasn't changed too much since it first emerged from under the wing of dance culture more than six years ago. But tastes have developed and trance is currently in the forefront of dance culture. This compilation does a good job of introducing the casual listener to trance, although I'd question the inclusion of some of the more chart-orientated tunes. Yet again we have the same old tunes which have been used in many compilations, although alternative mixes are used to give some originality. (6/10) PB
