BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent has called on the Clarets fans to keep the faith and promised to get his side in the promotion "shake-up" at the end of the season.

The Clarets' unbeaten home record went out of the window yesterday when they lost 2-1 to lowly Scunthorpe United in front of the Sky Television cameras.

And there were boos from sections of the Turf Moor crowd at the final whistle following Guy Ipuoa's late winner.

But Ternent - who has not made a bid for Huddersfield Town full-back Jamie Vincent according to Terriers' boss Steve Bruce - wants backing not barracking for his side from the Burnley faithful, who made up another 10,000-plus crowd.

"The crowd were obviously frustrated and I feel they have to get behind the side a little bit more than they do," said Ternent.

"The expectation level is high and if it's called having a go at them and then that's how it has to be.

"But we all understand their expectation levels, mine are the same, so are the players'. I felt they were fairly quiet yesterday."

Ternent, who was particularly disappointed that Burnley's dominant first-half performance was greeted with half-time cat-calls, added: "They should have a song to sing to get behind the team. Normally they are fantastic but this was the first time we had lost at home this season, and it was a game we could quite easily have won. They got behind us last year when we had lost 5-0 and 6-0. They are capable of doing it. It was disappointing for everyone yesterday." Ternent went on: "We've got to look forward. That's what I intend to do and that's what the players intend to do.

"We'll stick together and I hope the fans will stick with us because come the end of the season we'll be in the shake-up."

Burnley's results have just gone off the boil and they are now fifth in the Second Division.

Defensively they were poor against a Scunthorpe side bolstered by loan signings Clinton Marcelle from Barnsley and Newcastle's former Sunderland keeper Lionel Perez.

But the Clarets did create enough openings to have won the game. And compared with this time last year, it shouldn't be all gloom and doom provided Ternent's men quickly get back among the three-pointers.

"We've made great strides from last season and we'll continue to stick together. We've got two away games now and we need to be going and winning a couple of games, hopefully. We've got to re-group and crack on again," Ternent added.

"It was very disappointing. The first goal was a poor goal to give away but overall I thought we played extremely well, certainly in the first half. But it was one of those days when we couldn't get the ball in the net.

"He (Perez) had a fantastic debut and made some good stops but we gave two sloppy goals away. When you've got to score three goals at home to get a win and two to get a point that's not acceptable."

Meanwhile, there has been no formal approach from the Clarets for Vincent, who joined Huddersfield from Bournemouth for £440,000 on transfer deadline-day last season. The 24-year-old is currently out of the Terriers' line-up which may have prompted some interest from Ternent.

But the Clarets chief would be unlikely to shell out limited funds on bolstering a position where he is well catered for in the shape of Paul Smith, Tom Cowan and Mitchell Thomas, should he be switched from the centre of the defence.
