THE Blackburn Northern Hockey Club ladies first team travelled to Barnsley on Saturday to take on Don Valley in the second game of the North League season.
Blackburn were coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Sheffield the week before, and were determined to get the three points.
Scoring was fast and furious as Blackburn took an early 2-0 lead after only 15 minutes of play. Selena Reidy and Katie Hackson did the damage for Blackburn, and they were in firm control the entire first half. Kay Gough added a third goal and Vicky Boone scored a fourth from a short corner to round of Blackburn's scoring.
With five minutes remaining in the half, Blackburn looked unstoppable. The umpire, however, did his best to slow them down when he awarded Don Valley a dubious penalty stroke which they converted. Soon after Don Valley scored on a short corner, just seconds before the half time whistle blew. The second period saw both teams with opportunities, but Blackburn controlled the game. There were no more goals in the second half and Blackburn went home with a well-deserved 4-2 win.
Blackburn play host to York at Witton Park on Saturday (2pm).
