REGARDING Ron Freethy's article (LET, September 24), I beg to differ at his assertion that there used to be a windmill on the site of the Windmill Inn, Preston New Road, Samlesbury.
However, responding to Mr Freethy's relative appeal for further information, and the benefit of others, here is a fragmented excerpt.
The ancient windmill, of which the inn, at the junction of Intack Lane, derives its name, is much documented. It stood some distance away from the inn, on the brow of Mellor Moor, long before St Mary the Virgin Church spire appeared on the horizon, and later the spire of the Wesleyan Church.
The old mill was situated on a knoll across the road opposite the Millstone Inn, on the frontage of which are two grinding stones, preserved relics as an appropriate heritage monument.
It is claimed that John Wesley preached from the gallows of the mill when occupied as a meeting place by the local assembly of methodists.
