MARIE Rimmer has pledged the council's support for St Mary's Market traders by saying there are no plans to increase stallholders' rents in the near future.
Councillor Rimmer made her announcement at a full meeting of St Helens Council in response to concerns raised over the level of trade at the market. The council leader also stressed that the authority had an 'open door' policy so that traders could air any problems they might have.
She added that the council was committed to helping the retail sector wherever possible and pointed out that market rents have not been increased since 1994.
The multi-million pound market recently celebrated its first birthday, while the development of the nearby 'World of Glass' centre is almost complete and it is hoped this will be a further boost to town-centre trade.
