FIREFIGHTERS today issued a grim warning about children lighting bonfires after crew from three East Lancashire stations were called to tackle five simultaneous fires.
Blackburn firefighters tackled 24 separate incidents yesterday, and the main problem came when five fires were reported at about 7pm.
Leading Firefighter Tony Keane said: "These incidents are becoming a real cause for concern.
"At one point, both engines from Blackburn were dealing with bonfires, both engines from Darwen were called to tackle two more and one from Accrington had to come over too.
"It simply means that should there be a serious incident when the appliances are tied up like this, then crews will have to travel from further away.
"It is very dangerous for the children and also their families for them to divert the appliances away like this and I would like to appeal to people to tell children not to light fires."
