A PHOTOGRAPH of Auschwitz Death Camp, taken during a history trip, has earned Burnley teacher Alan Riley a place in a national exhibition.

Head of humanities at Towneley High School, Mr Riley visited Poland with a fellow teacher in April to learn more about historical events in the country.

The photograph, which Mr Riley describes as "just ordinary," is one of 500 chosen to form an archive for future generations to study and goes on display in Liverpool on Thursday. It will also appear on the History Channel website and may be included in a book published next month.

Mr Riley said: "I took the photographs to make displays and worksheets for the pupils and, by coincidence, the History Channel on Sky sent a letter to every school in the country asking for pupils or staff to send in photographs taken this century which would be worthwhile for future generations.

"I sent that photo and received a letter saying it had been chosen, but I think it was more for the historical content rather than from a photographic point of view. My pupils are very pleased. I have done a display in the main entrance hall at school which includes the photograph and the letter telling me it had been chosen."

Mr Riley has been invited to attend a private viewing of the exhibition with his wife and two children.
