A SLICKLY creative and very mobile Trafford gave the Magpies a football lesson and were full value not only for their victory but also for the winning margin. Three up in less than half an hour, the visitors were increasingly on song and allowed Chorley neither space nor time on the ball to mount any sort of recovery. So complete was Trafford's control that apart from flicking over the bar a Keith Evans free kick early in the second period, keeper Jim O'Donnell did not have to make more than a routine save in the entire game.
Striker Steve Shaughnessy returned to haunt his old club with the first two goals. He beat Simon Marsh with a well timed header in the 10th minute and bundled in the second after 24 minutes when a corner somehow eluded three home defenders at the near post.
The Magpies were effectively sunk soon afterwards when Anthony Hagan was allowed to race unchallenged into the box to meet a right wing cross with a thumping header.
Chorley did recover some territorial advantage in the second half and substitute Colin Potts should have done better than fire wide from a clear shooting position.
But the cutting edge was still with Trafford and when a 75th minute corner was pulled back to Matt Weston outside the penalty area he iced the vicitors' already rich cake with a stunning strike into the corner of the net.
