MORE sewage was to be pumped into Lancashire's rivers, despite fierce protests by the county council. Leader Mrs Louise Ellman blasted the government's new green policy as a "sham" after Environment Secretary Chris Patten gave the go-ahead to increase sewage discharge in 14 Lancashire rivers. The only river in East Lancashire to be directly affected was the Irwell.
