IF PEOPLE just personally attack the man instead of addressing the issues (any issue) then, in my opinion, they have either lost the argument or have something to hide.

Everyone should please be assured that, as a retired police officer and now a Hyndburn councillor, even if I only suspect some kind of corruption within the corridors of local government, I will consider it both my duty and a priority to put into effect a means to investigate the matter and to call for the alleged participants to publicly account for their actions (or inaction).

Accountability must be seen to be above-board and council officers and councillors alike should never be allowed to investigate themselves.

If people can't live with that and, instead, subject me to criticism, ridicule and threats - or just try to undermine me as a working councillor - then so be it.

It all just goes to strengthen my resolve and to ask further questions like: 'Why?'

ADRIAN SHURMER, Independent Councillor, Netherton Ward, Great Harwood.
