BURNLEY striker Andy Payton could face prosecution following an incident when his car was stopped by police officers for a routine check, police revealed today.
Lancashire police confirmed that at midnight on Sunday Mr Payton's Vauxhall Tigra car was stopped by officers in Coal Clough Lane, Burnley.
A spokesman said: "As the officers were walking back to their police vehicle the man who was accompanying them suddenly ran off and was never caught.
"Police contacted Burnley Football Club and Andy Payton along with his solicitor attended Colne police station at 11am yesterday. A file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider whether any charges should be brought. Mr Payton has not been charged and has not been arrested."
The striker, who is Burnley's top scorer this season, is in the Clarets squad to face Bristol City at Turf Moor tomorrow.
