Halton Hornets 18, Thatto Heath Crusaders 26
HEATH were made to fight all the way for this Lancashire Cup victory by Division Four title hopefuls Halton.
They started brightly, however, when centre Peter Derbyshire touched down after quick hands had produced an overlap.
Mike Woods added the conversion.
Although Heath threatened to score with every attack, Halton hit back when scrum-half Chris Walton chipped over, collected his own kick and touched down under the posts. Mark Birminghm converted.
Heath continued to attack and grabbed two tries in as many minutes. First wingman Mike Woods took the ball from actiong half-back inside his own half and broke three tackles before rounding the full-back to score.
Then second-rower Donoghue was put through by scrum-half Barry Ashall. Mike Woods added the conversion and it looked as though the floodgates were about to open.
But in the last minute of the first half Halton stand-off Alan Ditchfield pounced on a loose ball to score. Birmingham adde the extras.
And in the last set of six before the break Heath caught the Hornets defence napping and man-of-the-match David Lloyd was allowed to cross out wide and then run under the sticks, giving Woods a simple conversion.
Five minutes into the second half Halton reduced the gap with a fine individual try from centre Mathew Crossley, who raced in from 60 yards. In a nailbiting finish Heath stand-off Anthony Marsh chased his own grubber kick to touch down to seal a meeting with Leigh East in the next round.
