ST HELENS could soon have its own 'Who's Who' of the arts world.

Backed by funding from the North West Arts Board, St Helen's Council is carrying out a survey of arts activity and creative workers in the borough.

Jo Broad has been appointed Arts Support Officer with responsibility specifically for the arts in recognition of the role they can play socially, economically and in education.

It is now hoped to formulate a database of professional performers, practitioners, arts administrators, development workers or businesses serving any artistic discipline or creative trade. The survey also seeks nformation about amateur organisations with multiple membership. The parameters for the survey are wide, including, for example, creative construction trades (e.g. stonemasonry, metalworking, sign-writing) as well as traditional art forms. Organisers are particularly keen to track down skills and services attached to the film and TV industry such as writers, producers, costumiers, set-designers etc.

Individuals or groups who fit any of the above categories and who participate in the survey can choose to take advantage of a free entry in a forthcoming Directory of Arts Activity and Creative Trades to be published next year.

Anyone who can help by filling in or distributing questionnaires can get in touch via e-mail on artsaudit@positive.demon.co.uk; by fax on 0151 709 2575; or by telephone on 0151 709 6511

Questionnaires are also available at St Helens libraries, St Helens Chamber of Commerce, St Helens College, or at the council reception areas at the Rivington Centre and the town hall.
