AMANDA Lawrenson is heading down Mexico way to help people with cancer.

The 27-year-old, of Methuen Drive, Hoghton, will be cycling 600km across the country in February to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

The eight-day cycle starts at Alvarado on the Atlantic coast and crosses the Sierra Madre, rising to a peak of 3,000 metres before dropping down to the Pacific Ocean.

The gruelling route is mainly along small roads and tracks and will take in some breathtaking scenery.

Amanda, a buyer for the NHS, has to raise at least £2,500 for the charity.

She said: "I'm under no illusions about this trip. Cycling 600km across mountainous terrain in the Mexican heat will be the toughest thing I've ever attempted.

"But I am aware it is a minor challenge compared to that faced by people with cancer. Using my cycling to make a real difference is incredibly rewarding."

The charity funds specialist nurses and doctors, buildings for cancer treatment and care and grants for patients in financial difficulties.
