AN area of rough, grassed land is now an attractive community garden, thanks to the efforts of volunteers.
The Rishton Prospects Panel, a community organisation, joined forces with Groundwork East Lancashire, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, Hyndburn Council, local schools and residents to work on the scheme on a site at Hermitage Street and Parker Street, Rishton. Panel secretary Colin Cooper said it was the first major project undertaken by the panel, which was formed in 1996.
The scheme includes a new pathway and seating area, as well as planting.
It was designed after consultation with local people.
The centrepiece of the seating area is a mosaic pavement, which was designed, manufactured and laid by pupils from local schools. Mr Cooper said it was hoped the new-look area would benefit the whole community.
The panel has entered the project for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch awards.
Grimewatch, now in its 11th year, celebrates all kinds of green schemes.
There are categories for community groups, schools, local authorities, businesses and individuals.
Long-term projects and schemes which reflect East Lancashire's heritage are also considered.
