A FRIGHTENED woman dialled 999 to say she was trapped in her smoke-filled home in Stubbins today.
Corinne Littlewood, 35, was trapped in the front bedroom of the house in Robert Street by a fire which started in the bathroom and filled the stairwell with acrid smoke.
The fire is believed to have been started by a scented candle which set fire to shower curtains, towels and then the bath itself.
The heat caused water pipes to burst.
Leading firefighter James Hardy of Ramsbottom said: "She was awakened at 5am by the smell of smoke and was unable to get downstairs. She rang 999 and was waiting for us near to the front bedroom window. We put up a ladder and walked her down."
She was suffering from the effects of smoke. She was given oxygen at the scene and then taken to Bury General hospital for a check-up.
Leading Firefighter Hardy said: "She is now back home and recovering from her ordeal."
