STAN Ternent has vowed to go into Sunday's FA Cup clash at Barnet with all guns blazing as the Clarets bid to bring some long-awaited cup success back to Turf Moor.

Burnley haven't got past the first hurdle in the competition since 1996 when they beat Lincoln and then Walsall to set up a mouthwatering third round clash with Anfield giants Liverpool.

But as the Clarets season starts to come to the boil on two fronts, Ternent has promised to put aside all thoughts of promotion to concentrate on Sunday's clash.

"A run in the FA Cup is good," said Ternent.

"Although we've been put back until Sunday, you get one chance at it and it's a special competition.

"You get a different buzz from that than anything.

"It's a one-off situation and you have to be right on the day.

"But we have some experienced players, we've got a good team spirit and we'll be ready for it."

With the Barnet clash being put back to Sunday, the Clarets now face two crucial games in the space of three days, with Wrexham set to visit Turf Moor for a Nationwide Second Division fixture on Tuesday night.

But there's no question of Burnley saving themselves, even though their priority remains the league.

"We've got to be careful of that," said Ternent. "We've got two games in a very short space of time and the league is obviously our priority. But the FA Cup is also very important.

"Everyone tends to use the old saying 'take each game as it comes'. It's not quite like that for a manager though.

"You have to weigh up what's what but I'll certainly field the strongest side that I can on Sunday then I'll cross the other bridge when I come to it." A cup run could also provide Ternent with some much-needed transfer funds as the coffers at Turf Moor are currently running dry. But the Clarets chief is also aware of the fact a decent show in the FA Cup can also provide the team with momentum for the rest of the season.

"If you are winning matches, which you are on a cup run, then that breeds confidence," said Ternent.

"And also from a financial point of view it's very important for the football club.

"So we'll prepare as we always prepare. We'll go down on Saturday, we'll train, then we'll have a nice rest.

"We'll get up early have a nice loosener, a bit of pre-match, then it's up and at them and hopefully we can get the right result."

Ternent was delighted with last weekend's 2-0 victory over Bristol City - a result which keeps the Clarets in the top five in Division Two.

And that has allowed both the players and the coaching staff to savour the build up to Sunday's clash, which is being screened live on Sky Television.

"That was a very important game for us," said Ternent. "After winning at Cambridge we needed to win that and it puts us in the top half dozen.

"So now we can enjoy the build up to the FA Cup and we are really looking forward to it."

Tom Cowan is unlikely to be considered after feeling some reaction to his hamstring injury following Wednesday night's reserve team clash.

But other than that, Ternent should be able to pick from a full strength squad apart from long-term injury victim Peter Swan.

Rossendale Clarets are reminding fans who are travelling down to Barnet on Sunday that the clocks go back on Saturday night.
