Haydock 18 Simms Cross 22 HAYDOCK looked to have won this game in the dying minutes.

But the outcome of the dress rehearsal for this Saturday's Lancashire Cup tie was snatched away from them in the last minute.

Earlier defences looked on top before Haydock took the lead with a 12th minute penalty goal from Boland.

Two minutes later Simmies replied with a try in the corner. And the Widnes side went further in front with a converted try after 22 minutes.

Two further Boland penalties brought the Yickers closer before Simms Cross stretched their advantage to 12-6 at the break.

Haydock started the second half strongly and straight away substitute Fearnley scored in the corner after good work by Wade. Boland converted.

With both teams tackling well, chances were at a premium. But with 10 minutes to go Fearnley grabbed his second try and Boland's conversion made it 18-12 in Haydock's favour.

At this stage Haydock should have consolidated. But twice they lost the ball inside their own 25. And Simmies capitalised on the mistakes to score a try in the corner.

And with a minute to go the Widnes side barged over near the posts for the match-winning score.

Best for Haydock were Boland, Reynolds, Carroll and Dolan. Folly Lane A 20

Haydock maintained their unbeaten start to the season with this hard-fought win.

Second-rower Simon Scott set the Yickers on the road to victory when he made a break and flicked out a pass to winger Tony Worral, who crossed wide out.

But Folly roared back with a converted try.

But Pat Philbin was next on the scoresheet with a try converted by Neil Chisnall. Tony Worrall then scored under the sticks and Chisnall added the extras.

Folly hit back after the break with two tries from acting half-back. But the introduction of Tommy Frodsham proved decisive as he went over from a scrum move and then created the space for David Owen to go over.

The Hitchen Security man of the match award went to Simon Scott with Gary Conley, Lee Cooper and Phil Barton in contention.

Jimmy Jenkins won the Valley Taxis Tackle Shield.
