A COMPETITION has been launched to find a name for the new bridge which will cross the Liverpool-Manchester railway to join Bold Moss with the former Bold colliery and power station sites.

Winner of the competition will receive a portable colour television and an invitation to join VIP guests at the official opening.

Work is now well under way on the bridge, which will take pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders across the railway, providing full access to the 130-hectare site.

The design of the bridge, by Cass Associates, was itself the winner of a competition organised by St Helens Council and Groundwork St Helens, Knowsley and Sefton.

Ove Arup and Partners are the engineers for the project and the bridge is being built on site and will be lifted into place by a giant crane in January, 2,000.

Once opened to the public, the bridge will provide a vital link to allow everyone to enjoy the site, which has extensive woodland planting, water bodies and a network of paths.

Groundwork has been working with the local community since 1990 on the restoration of the former colliery spoil tip on Bold Moss to the north of the railway. In 1995, work began on the former colliery and power station sites to the south of the railway as part of the national Groundwork Changing Places programme supported by the Millennium Commission.

ALL suggested names for the bridge should be sent to: Bridge Naming Competition, Groundwork St Helens, Knowsley and Sefton, 19/27 Shaw Street, St Helens, Merseyside WA10 1DF, telephone: (01744) 739396, fax (01744) 24081, e-mail:mfarrell@groundwork.org.uk. Entries must include the sender's name and address. Closing date is Friday, November 19.
