HOPPERS climbed to fourth place in Jewson National One with a 48-19 win over Blackheath, thanks mainly to a first half display which demoralised their opponents.
An early try from Jason Brittin following a line-out set Hoppers on the road.
Although enjoying the lion's share of possession, they were unable to increase their lead until the 21st minute.
Then the rout began.
Glynn Dewhurst drove over for the second try after Hoppers had gone close on a couple of occasions.
The backs then got in on the act with Brian Wellens and Gary Monaghan combining to put the centre in.
Glynn converted from touch.
Chris Stewart takes credit for the next score with his harrying of a Blackheath defender causing the ball to fall free close to the home line.
Stewart was favourite to reclaim the ball but he was held back, the referee awarding a penalty try.
A second try for Brittin was again the result of the efforts of the forwards.
Monaghan also claimed his second try after forwards and backs had combined and with Glynn making it four consecutive conversions the lead was 38 points.
Just before the break a Wilkins try converted by Fitzgerald followed a rare Blackheath attack.
Hoppers were quickly on the scoreboard as the second half began with the Wellens/Monaghan combination leading to a third try for the elusive centre. Glynn again converted.
It was then that Blackheath finally got their act together enjoying a more cohesive period which was rewarded by tries for Cotterill and Ratcliffe.
With one conversion they had reached 19 points and there was plenty of time left.
Despite losing coach Wellens with a knee injury, Hoppers reorganised and dug deep.
Some stubborn defending ended Blackheath's hopes and it was Glynn who had the last word with an injury time drop goal.
On Saturday Hoppers are on the road again for a Tetley's Bitter Cup round three.
Hoppers take on Rugby Lions from the Allied Dunbar Premiership Two.
Although from a league higher than Hoppers, the Midlands side are not having a good season and present the Lightfoot Lane side with an excellent opportunity to book a place in the next round draw which will involve the giants from the Allied Dunbar Premiership.
