Liverpool St Helens 15 Bedford Athletic 19 THE Moss Laners were once again were left to contemplate how they had lost a game during which they had been the better team for long periods.
Inexperience is no doubt a factor, coupled with a tendency for impatience, and this had led to errors at crucial times, so that potential scoring opportunities have passed by.
Prospects looked good in the early stages as the home side took the game to their opponents and they were quickly rewarded when skipper Lupton forced his way over for an unconverted try.
LSH tried to capitalise on this but they were unable to gain a steady supply of first phase possession, particularly at the line outs where a strong wind made throwing a lottery, and Bedford were gradually able to work their way back into the game.
LSH created a number of chances, and pressure exerted gave three kickable penalty chances but the normally reliable Cumming was unable to convert these into points, and the visitors scored next with a converted try.
As the half closed an overlap was created by LSH, but Jones was forced out of play at the corner flag and the only other score came from a Cumming penalty to give the home side a narrow advantage at half-time.
The second half began as a replica of the first, with the forwards driving play down-field and creating a chance for Lupton to score, this being converted by Cumming. For 10 minutes LSH battled in the visitors 22 metre area for a further score but were unable to add to their tally and Bedford finally relieved pressure.
As time wore on LSH allowed themselves to become frustrated by inconsistent refereeing decisions and a number of wrong options taken, or errors made, allowed the visitors back into the game as the Bedford kicker converted each penalty chance given into points, giving the visitors the winning score of 19-15.
