A PIONEERING energy efficiency scheme for static mobile homes in the Wyre has proved a success.

The Wyred For Energy scheme was launched by Wyre Council earlier this year to improve energy efficiency in the borough's mobile homes or park homes as they are now termed.

There are currently more than 1,000 pitches for such properties in the Wyre, many of them owned by elderly people.

The scheme offers grants and interest free loans to enable residents to carry out insulation work.

Demand for the scheme has been high with the target of 10 loans this year already exceeded.

An innovative thermal insulation scheme which can be applied to the exterior of the homes has proved particularly successful.

Eligibility is assessed on the basis of how much residents can aford and applicants have the option to fund the work themselves.

Wyre environmental health officer Rodger Wightman said he was delighted with the success of the scheme.

He said: "We are committed to ensuring everyone who lives in park homes throughout the borough knows about and has the opportunity to take advantage of the scheme.

"The benefits to be reached are enormous. Not only is it possible to make big savings in the longer term but taking energy efficiency seriously helps keep us healthier, safer and conserve our resources."
