A TOURISM officer to lead a campaign to bring millions of pounds of extra income to Pendle is needed as soon as possible, councillors agreed.
They voted against a proposal to wait until the start of the next financial year in April before taking on the new officer who will oversee tourism development in the borough.
Tourists and day visitors already bring in £12million a year to Pendle. A recent report by consultants brought in by the council said that could rise to almost £16million if the area makes the most of its attractions such as its beautiful countryside and industrial heritage.
The officer's salary and associated costs are expected to come to £40,000 a year. The appointment is likely to cost the council £10,000 from this year's budget depending on how quickly someone is found to fill the post.
