A COUNCILLOR who has halted dozens of traffic-calming schemes has backed the Lancashire Evening Telegraph campaign to make the Grane Road safer.
Coun Douglas Deakin, chairman of Hyndburn's transportation and highways committee, approved plans to put all the area's traffic-calming schemes on hold in May.
But he said: "The Grane Road should be made an exception because it is an extremely dangerous road. It is different because there have been so many accidents there.
"Lancashire County Council has known about this road for a long, long while and, at the moment, they are dragging their feet about acting. They have asked us to get a move on with the smaller schemes in Hyndburn, but they have done nothing about this."
Coun Deakin said one of the problems was lack of communication between the councils responsible for the road and it was not clear whether Lancashire's or Hyndburn's officers should put together plans for safety measures in the Belthorn area.
Hyndburn's transportation and highways committee has held a meeting to discuss the Grane Road.
Coun Deakin did not know when the work would be done if it was decided Hyndburn's officers should do the work.
