GREAT Harwood cruised into the second round of the Lancashire Marsden Challenge Trophy with the minimum of fuss last night to make up for their disappointing FA Vase exit at the weekend.

Manager Denis Underwood was gutted after Crook Town comprehensively crushed his Reds on Saturday with a thumping 4-0 victory.

But Harwood managed to put a smile back on their boss's face after proving too strong for North Western Trains League neighbours Colne.

"It was important we got a win under our belts after Saturday," said Underwood.

"They tried to make it difficult for us but I always felt we could have upped it if we needed to."

Clive Dunn set the ball rolling in the first half, popping up at the far post to belt a left footer into the roof of the net after Graham Lightbown's corner had flashed across the face of goal.

And the all-important second arrived two minutes after the break when great inter-play found Steve Pickup in space out wide and his cross was headed down by Zav Bowers for Paul Brown to blast home.

Pacey forward Martin Aspinwall added the third with a 20-yard screamer on 70 minutes.

But Colne did bag a consolation five minutes from time when Vidal Spain ghosted past two defenders before firing past John Morrey.

Harwood physio Sean Riley has left The Showground to link up with UniBond Premier Division outfit Bamber Bridge.
