THE search is on for the North West's top street cleaner.
Anti-litter charity the Tidy Britain Group is looking for people who not only keep the environment clean and safe, but who do that little bit extra for the community.
The 1999 North West Silver Broom awards are sponsored by British Aerospace and are being supported by the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
Nominations are sought for street cleaners, lengthsmen or parish caretakers who deserve recognition for their good work.
Members of the public who contribute to clearing up their local environment can also be nominated in a separate category.
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on January 25 at the new JJB Stadium, home of the Wigan Warriors Rugby League and Wigan Athletic Football Club.
Each regional winner will receive £100, an engraved trophy and a certificate.
The overall North West winner will receive £200, the Silver Broom Award and a certificate, as well as the title of Street Cleaner of the Year.
The closing date for nominations is December 14.
Details of the scheme are available from Joanne Whitaker, Tidy Britain Group, Elizabeth House, North West Office, The Pier, Wigan WN3 4EX, telephone 01942 612600.
