A WOMAN who provided the getaway car for two thieves to do an Asda "trolley dash," is behind bars.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Diane Jaques, 34, had fallen in with the wrong crowd.

Jaques, of Queensberry Road, Burnley, was sent to prison for six weeks, after admitting handling stolen goods and failing to surrender.

Arthur Stuttard, prosecuting, said Jaques had driven two people to Accrington Asda, so they could do a "trolley dash."

Two video recorders worth £279 were stolen and put in the car.

The vehicle was stopped from driving off by Asda employees and a "public spirited" van driver, who blocked the car's path.

When the defendant was arrested and interviewed, she said she did not know one of the men very well and the other had been ill and looking for some toilets.

The next thing she knew was being told to "just drive."

Sam Dodd, defending, said for most of her life Jaques had led a decent existence.

She had then made a number of court appearances for offences of dishonesty.

The defendant did not offend to support a drugs habit.

The explanation was just that she had just fallen in with a circle of friends.

Sentencing Jaques, Judge Raymond Bennett said the offence was premeditated and if it was not for the fact it was Jaques' first prison sentence, the term would have been longer.
