ON-STREET parking permit plans for Leigh have been scrapped.
Wigan highways and works committee have decided to shelve the plans which would have meant residents and workers would have had to pay to park in streets off Railway Road.
Borough Engineer John Simm explained how the idea was shelved after a simple Yes/No questionnaire went out to 1,124 homes.
"It's been scrapped but there are certain things which came up which we will still look at," said Mr Simm.
"But the overall principle of a residents' parking scheme has been abandoned.
"The questionnaire asked people simply if they did or did not want it. The result was an overwhelming 'No'.
"Out of 1,124 questionnaires sent out 529 were returned of which 448 (84%) answered 'No' and 77 said 'Yes'. Plus there were a few 'No comments'."
