I HAVE had numerous complaints about the state of public toilets around the borough, and in particular at the Bury Interchange. These complaints prompted me to raise the matter at the council meeting on Nov 3.
I asked why the toilets on the Interchange were allowed to operate during the evening in a filthy, disgusting state, with a potential hazard to public health.
I pointed out that these toilets were used by residents and visitors to the borough, and that it was impossible to imagine what they thought about this council, especially as we are a joint authority for the control of the Passenger Transport Authority.
Councillor Julie Higson replied that they were waiting for the new "Superloo" and the mayor added that they had no authority over the toilets - which is not correct, for the reasons already stated. May I bring it to the attention of Coun Higson that the council has a duty of care to protect against public health hazards.
We have a department which can close down private restaurants and any other establishment which threatens the health of the public, so why do we allow public toilets to remain open in the same disgusting state?
