Morecambe 4 Hednesford 1A FEW more Shrimps fans will no doubt be making the long trip to Altrincham on Saturday after this display.

It's not just Morecambe fans who reckon their side is flying this year. The powers that be at the FA must also have been studying the league table - they've picked three Morecambe players for the FA XI to play a Unibond team next month.

Justin Jackson, Phil Eastwood and Stewart Drummond all made the squad. But the fans will be more pleased by the fact that they are just six points behind league leaders Kingstonian with three games in hand.

Long term fans, used to the untold high and lows that their team habitually provide, won't be carried away just yet. But it really was a superb win on Sunday. Especially the five minute spell half way through the opening period that produced three goals.

Paul Burns scored the first on 19 minutes. He latched on to a long through ball and headed past Hednesford keeper Morgan. Next up was Darren Lyons just two minutes later, volleying home from a tight angle from a Justin Jackson cross. It was Jackson who scored the first just three minutes after that. And what a beauty it was. He collected on the edge of the area, beat two men, and lobbed the keeper.

Three goals and (as they say) the fans went wild. They had to wait until eight from time to see their side knock in their fourth. Neill Hardy latched on to a through ball and poked it home.

On this form Morecambe could beat anyone in the league. Bring on Altrincham.

Team: Banks, Fensome, Brown, Farrell, McKearney, Burns (Smith 81), Lyons (Thompson 81), Drummond, Jackson, Hardy, Takano (Eastwood 72).
