BASKETBALL fever is set to sweep Preston as more and more youngsters get involved with the once American-dominated sport.
Thanks to Preston Borough Council's sports development unit, locals across the town are getting involved in the game, with Preston preparing to hold its own Sunny Delight tournament in December.
Several events have already been held, including an Off the Glass open day at Preston College to decide if there was interest in the part, and with 30 young people showing up, it was decided there was enough support to give the sport a real push in Preston.
Now plans are afoot to turn Preston into a hot bed of basketball talent in the same way that Preston used to churn out the stars for the soccer field, with a special basketball forum being created.
Ibby Khan, from Preston's sports development unit, said: "Initially, we want to concentrate on developing opportunities for young people to take up the sport and trying out their sporting skills.
"Individuals and teams can come along to Preston College's sports centre to see us on Thursday evenings between 6.30pm and 8.30pm to see how they can get involved.
"We now have 30 young people attending our sessions, and we are now trying to develop a league programme among teams."
He added: "In the end, we want to start an under 14s central venue basketball league.
"Talented players would progress into an advanced coaching programme with a view to entering a team in the National Passerrall League."
Coaching staff are currently being sought to help run the classes, which cost £2.50 a week. Any parents interested in obtaining Table Administration and Refereeing in basketball qualifications can contact Ibby on (01772) 704002. The forum also has coaches to lend out to private events.
