ENGINEERING became part of the curriculum for model-making pupils from a Leigh junior school.

Seven-year-olds from Pennington CE designed and built a series of amazing animated models using pneumatic and hydraulic principles learning from their visits to Leigh firm Peter Miles Engineering.

And the local branch of the Engineering Employers Federation, Bolton-based EEF Lancashire, praised their work.

EEF Lancashire chief executive John Brown presented certificates to the 32 juniors from Christ Church school, Pennington, who were involved in the Engineering Employers Federation's 'Technology Tree' project.

Certificates and book tokens also went to youngsters who designed safety posters based on what they learned about Health and Safety in the workplace.

EEF Lancashire's Ted Hukin said: "I wish to thank the many people involved not least the teachers, Education Action Zone representatives and management and employees of Peter Miles.

"But perhaps the biggest round of applause should go to the children themselves for their enthusiasm and keen desire to learn.

"The animated models created are truly amazing.

"Surely we have some young engineers, male and female, in the making here."
