MIKE Watkinson has agreed to take over as Lancashire's second team coach and captain.
But the 38-year-old all-rounder will remain a key member of the senior one-day squad at Old Trafford.
Watkinson has signed a new one-year deal and says: "I'm pleased that I'll be able to couple being involved in the one-dayers and passing on my experience to the younger lads. I'm looking forward to it."
He takes over the Second XI duties from Peter Sleep who quit last September, disappointed that Lancashire had not considered him for the senior coaching vacancy.
Watkinson made his Lancashire debut in 1982 at the same time as Neil Fairbrother and together they have shared in 10 one-day trophy triumphs. Both are former captains, Watkinson leading the side to the NatWest Trophy and Benson and Hedges Cup double in 1996.
Lancashire chairman Jack Simmons said: "Mike is the ideal man to replace Peter Sleep. He is one of the most respected pros in the game, and the lads who are coming through the ranks will be well looked after. And, if there's an emergency, he will still be available for the county championship as well."
