IN response to B. J. Millner's letter (November 11) I would express the view (which I anticipate is shared by many) that adopting a title such as 'chair' that is not gender-based is not a matter of sexism or indeed feminism.
It is simply a matter of recognition that organisations are no longer led exclusively by men and so such terms are not strictly appropriate.
Nor is there anything wrong with the economy of words. It is, for example, acceptable to refer to the headteacher (be it master or mistress!) of a school as the head. I would hope, however, that this would not be taken literally.
