LYTHAM Chess Club's second team were hopeful at winning their recent second division match at Bispham firsts and, indeed, should have done - but David Dawber inexplicably allowed himself to be mated by Alison Screen.
With Kostas Domoras also below par in losing Blaine McGrady, it was left to Phil Raynor and Darren Jones to save the match and reach a 2-2 scoreline.
The third team scored a victory over up-and-coming Cleveleys juniors first team.
Dawber this time won with a checkmate and John Regan won quickly.
Nick Ward battled back from an inferior position to draw.
Bruce Tinton pulled a point back for Cleveleys by beating Peter Dirs.
The fifth team narrowly lost their third division match against Cleveleys juniors seconds by 2-1.
Skipper John Chamberlain obtained the only win, while Stephen Luck drew.
Lytham introduced league debutant Peter Metcalfe (formerly of Bolton) in this match, but he lost his game.
