The bus was parked in Penrith Road, Portico, at about 6.45pm when someone threw a large brick through the window resulting in the driver getting fragments of glass in his eye and sustaining a cut to his forehead.
DS Tommy Wright, at St Helens police station, said: "This was a particularly nasty unprovoked attack and I urge anyone who may have witnessed the offender or offenders to contact us. The injuries sustained by the driver could have been much worse."
Anyone to help can contact the Incident Management Unit at St Helens on 0151 777 6969.
