A CLITHEROE primary school is marking the Millennium by creating a school garden.
Wasteland beside Pendle Primary School, in Princess Avenue, is being transformed into an outdoor teaching area with a pond, meadow, flowers and marshland.
The project was started earlier this year by the Friends of Pendle School. Secretary Jill Lightfoot, said they wanted to give all the children access to pond and stream life and birds and insects.
It is still at a very early stage and will take up to two years to complete.
Bird boxes have already been put in and an organic grass meadow established. Litter has been cleared from the area and an area dug over for wood chip paths to be created.
Other plans include a 2000 logo made from pebbles - each one will have a child's name on it and will be placed in the design by the child - and the burying of a time capsule.
A viewing platform will be built to allow children to look over the whole garden and a decking area is to be built by the side of the pond so children can work beside the water.
The project has been entered for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch awards, which reward all kinds of green projects.
There are categories for schools, community groups, local authorities, businesses and individuals.
