PUPILS at an East Lancashire high school were today urged not to panic after it was revealed a teacher is in hospital with meningitis.
The 42-year-old man, who lives in Accrington, was admitted to Bury General Hospital last week.
A spokeswoman for East Lancashire Health Authority said it had been confirmed as meningitis although public health experts were waiting for the results of laboratory tests to determine the strain.
She said: "It is being treated as a one-off case and there is no need for parents and pupils to panic.
"A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Council said none of the pupils or teachers at Darwen Vale High School had been given antibiotics and pupils should attend school as normal. All parents have been notified by letter.
Headteacher Lynn Dunning today declined to comment.
