Worthington (League) Cup 4th round: Bolton Wanderers 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0
COMEBACK kid Robbie Elliott was on target last night as Bolton dumped another Premiership side out of the Worthington Cup last night.
Making his first appearance after a hernia operation, the former Newcastle midfielder headed home a Hasney Aljoree cross, flicked on by Eidur Gudjohnsen, shortly after coming on as a second-half replacement for the injured Gudni Bergsson.
Wednesday did create chances, Andy Booth and Gerald Sibon both going close, but they met goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen in unbeatable form.
The big Finn even saved a Gilles de Bilde penalty, awarded when Aljofree felled Petter Rudi with ten minutes to go.
Bolton almost added a second in injury time when Elliott broke from midfield and found himself with only the keeper to beat, only to see his effort bounce off the left-hand upright.
The victory earns Wanderers a quarter final date with Wimbledon - their third Premiership opponents in the competition so far.
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce said: "I'm absolutely delighted with that win, and particularly with Robbie.
"He played after having just one training session following a hernia operation and ends up getting a goal like that to see us through.
"We played some fine stuff and had more gilt-edged chances than them. But we also showed that we can battle away and play as a unit. People are fighting and scrapping for the club as well as playing good football."
