OVER the past few weeks, I have read with interest letters regarding Grane Road from the "Don't blame the road, blame the drivers" lobby.
I agree with the sentiments expressed, but what action do they recommend other than "educate the drivers?"
I would be the first to admit that there are good fast drivers and bad slow ones, but if traffic-calming measures, including speed restrictions, are not required where do we go from here?
A change in the attitude of drivers would be much more sensible, beneficial and cheaper, but what do we do in the meantime?
How do we help the residents of Grane Road who have to endure the ever-increasing volume of speeding traffic, especially the elderly and mothers with young children who often wait 15 minutes to cross the road to catch a bus?
Moving is not an option - some have been residents for more than 50 years.
The traffic-calming measures requested by Grane Residents Association are no different from those already in operation in other parts of Rossendale.
I believe that if motorists cannot be relied upon to act sensibly, then they must be guided.
If this were not the case, there would not be pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, level crossings in existence - or even the Highway Code.
MARGARET MURRAY (Secretary, Grane Residents Association), Grane Road, Haslingden.
