THE Wombles of Wimbledon Common are helping pupils at a Burnley nursery school go green.
The example set by Orinoco, Tobermory, Uncle Bulgaria and friends is being used to teach youngsters at Accrington Road Nursery School about reducing waste and recycling.
Nursery nurse Liz Lupton said children are asked to collect newspapers, magazines or litter from their families and carers over the weekend and bring it back to school for recycling. The message is reinforced with videos and books about how the Wombles look after the world.
Pupils have also been collecting tin foil, stamps and used greetings cards to raise money for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
The nursery school has entered the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch competition.
Now in its 11th year, Grimewatch is run in conjunction with the Tidy Britain Group, Groundwork, British Aerospace and the Environment Agency. There are categories for schools, community groups, businesses, local authorities and individuals.
For details, contact the Grimewatch line on 01254 678678 ext 244, send an e-mail to vcowan@lancashire.newsquest.co.uk, or a fax to 01254 680429. The closing date for entries is December 10.
