A CONVENIENCE store chain has been told it can advertise cash machines outside a shop in Barnoldswick but not install the "hole in the wall" cash points.
Planning permission was refused for two cash machines outside the Day & Nite store in Church Street.
But moments later Pendle Council's West Craven area committee gave consent for two illuminated signs advertising the cash machines above where they have have been.
Senior planning manager Andy Wiggett explained to confused councillors that the machines and advertising signs are covered by different set of rules and had to be treated as separate matters.
The machines were rejected because councillors feared customers would ignore double yellow lines and park outside the store which is on a busy street near a bend in the road and a zebra crossing, causing a hazard. They were told there were no grounds for refusing the signs.
"You can't turn down the signs because you decided you didn't want the cash machines there," explained Mr Wiggett. "You can only turn them down on the grounds of highway safety and visual amenity."
