TOGETHER with many other citizens of Bury I was deeply saddened by the news of the death of Councillor David Davies whose well-earned retirement from public life was tragically cut short.

Always true to his ideal of public service, Coun Davies offered me continuous advice, support and help when, many years ago, I started the development of Greenmount Wild Bird Sanctuary in Kirklees Valley.

He came to our fund-raising events in his capacity as mayor, officially opened our first building, and remained delighted with our aims of a nature reserve open to everyone for the study of wildlife and ecology. The last time he contacted me was just before his last illness, when he said he was most upset by the closure of the sanctuary to the public. He had said he would visit me.

May I add my humble tribute to the countless others by quoting from the Bible words which Coun Davies must have read many times: "I was a stranger and you took me in . . . "
