I WRITE after watching the Bury and Preston North End game on Saturday. I was sitting in the South Stand because Preston fans had been allocated the Family Stand where I would normally sit.
Because of the way Bury were playing, some fans were losing their temper - which was perhaps understandable - and a few of them started to shout disgraceful racist abuse at Bury's Adrian Littlejohn, Chris Billy and Andy Woodward, and Kurt Nogan of Preston. Words such as "Paki" and "coon" were repeatedly used.
What also concerned me was that a steward was sitting right in front of these people, and well within hearing range, and did nothing about it. And what would have happened to any spectator who had spoken to these idiots about what they were saying? They would have come in for abuse because that is what these people go to the match for.
I couldn't believe that they got away with it. They were sitting almost on the steward's knee and yet they were completely ignored. I am sure I wasn't the only one disgusted by their racist taunts. They should stay away because they are not fans.
I would also suggest to Bury FC that they put stewards in front of blocks I and H in the South Stand who do not look as though they are still at school . Unfortunately they are not taken seriously and seem very reluctant to intervene when it is required.
