Haresfinch 18 Widnes Albion 14 FINCH put their indifferent league form behind them to notch a notable success in this North West Counties Challenge Cup clash.
The Division Two strugglers produced a fine team effort to deservedly overcome an Albion side currently lying in fourth place in Division One.
Finch enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and took an 8-nil lead with a try and two goals by loose-forward Tony Seabrook.
Albion hit back and the sides were tied at 8-8 midway through the first half. A try from acting half-back by hooker Stu Simmons edged Finch back in front, but Albion led 14-12 at the break, thanks to a converted touchdown.
Defences dominated for much of the second half with both sides guilty of basic handling errors when in potential scoring positions.
But Finch grabbed the all-important score when veteran prop Karl Farrall went over from a pass by stand-off Dave Meadows, Seabrook adding the conversion to make it 18-14.
Stuart Simmons was adjudged the Franco's Wholesale Ltd. man-of-the-match for Finch, with full-back Dave Penny and prop Danny Flynn also in contention.
