WEIGHT training is to be dropped from the activities at Sutton Leisure Centre because of a decline in the number of users.
St Helens Council Leisure Committee has agreed to the closure of the weights training room which will revert to its former use for the storage of sports equipment.
The committee heard that the facility - created in the 80s - was of a poor standard with only a small amount of equipment located in a room with inadequate ventilation. The number of people using the weight training room was also declining year-on-year.
Councillors agreed that the council should try to provide a purpose-built fitness suite in any future redevelopment scheme for the Sutton centre.
A council spokesman said upgraded facilities were available at Broadway and there were also facilities at Queens Park. A fitness suite was also part of the plans for the proposed new leisure centre at Parr.
